By 2026, things seem a lot better. In the wake of natural disasters and a siege of unchecked diseases, a peculiar transition has taken place. Most people have armed themselves and holed up, while others joined protective condos called bastions, where they work for the Net from home. There is, of course, prejudice and fear of the Fecty - persons infected with any of the big seven incurable diseases. A few years back, a global media complex rose up to take over many of the functions of recently failed governments and medical institutions, but, the challenges were too great, so they resorted to devious, self-damaging means. A cult of women called the “Angelita” has infiltrated and begun to dominate the media and health care professions. They dress in sparkling robes, but their mission is not religious. They have gained power by nursing the dying and recruiting them to give away their land and wealth for the promise of a cost-free existence and lifetime medical care. The Angelita have also diversified. Their radical entertainment venues, lotteries based on broadcasts of deadly war-games have stimulated the economy, promoting spending and betting. But who is really behind it all, and what about power struggles afoot within their ranks? What will happen when our lusty novice yachtsmen get deeply involved? Will secret plots and intrigues change the balance of power?
