He was a sinicized Yi, an ethnic minority native to Yunnan. Long Yun was Governor and warlord of the province of Yunnan from 1927 until October, 1945 when he was removed by order of Chiang Kai-shek. He was replaced as Governor by his cousin, General Lu Han, who went on to command the Chinese forces which occupied northern French Indochina (specifically Viet-Nam and Laos above the 16th parallel) immediately after the Japanese surrender in late 1945. Both Long Yun and Lu Han defected to the winning Communist side after the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949.
